Stevie Wonder files for divorce from fashion designer wife

Missouri residents may be interested to know that renowned soul singer, Stevie Wonder, and his wife, fashion designer Kai Millard Morris, have decided to end their marriage. Wonder filed divorce papers on July 26 after 11 years of marriage.

The petition filed by Wonder's lawyers under his legal name Stevland Morris states the high-profile couple had separated three years earlier. Although Wonder made his fortune long before he married Morris in 2001, and Millard's company shut down two years ago, this high-net worth divorce may still face challenges as the couple's lawyers negotiate asset division and support amounts.

For example, if the former couple had filed for divorce in Missouri (which they didn't), the fact that the wife's business shut down after the couple separated might present difficulty in establishing the value of each person's separate property. Whether the couple was legally separated in 2009 or simply moved apart would also impact the case were it taking place in Missouri.

If a divorcing couple does not reach an agreement on property division in our state, then family law courts will determine which property is each person's separate property and then determine how to divide the property. In making these decisions, the court must consider numerous factors, including:

  • The economic circumstances of each couple at the time of asset division
  • What each person contributed when they purchased marital property
  • The value of non-marital property given to each spouse
  • How each party acted during the marriage
  • And which parent will have primary custody of the minor children

In Wonder's case, he is also asking for joint legal and joint physical custody of the former couple's two sons, ages 10 and seven. Papers also state he is willing to pay child support and spousal support, though no dollar amounts were listed in the filing.
